About the opportunity

As the Director of Tax, you will oversee the tax compliance and automation of our proprietary platform and ensure all funds and investments going through the product are supported— from customer questions, proactive customer education, and thought leadership pieces to completing and filing tax returns in an automated manner. If you like breaking down and explaining complex concepts and often seek out efficiencies in your own work, this job is a good fit.

What you'll be doing

You will work alongside our VP of Finance and a network of external tax advisors to build sustainable processes and systems that automate tax return preparation and address customer inquiries. The ideal candidate will be excited about working in a fast-paced startup and creating leverage and efficiency through automation.

Tax Preparation

  • Utilize technology automation to connect product data to tax software with the goal of preparing partnership tax returns and Schedules K1, K2, and K3 for our Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) and Funds on or around Jan 31 of the year.

  • Able to independently conduct research and analysis to resolve complex tax questions and interpret tax laws and regulations.

  • Manage the vendor relationship with tax software.

Tax Support

  • Respond to customer inquiries for information or clarification regarding their annual tax documents as well as any investments contemplated to be run on our platform.

  • Respond to in-house inquiries regarding tax implications of investing in certain investments.

  • Proactively communicate tax matters to customers and staff.

  • Build and maintain a knowledge base to educate our stakeholders with respect to tax matters and why we prepare tax documents the way we do.

Tax Automation

  • Liaise with the Product team on building capabilities that connect investment events to tax software.

  • Ensure that all events that occur in our ledger are accurately mapped to tax events.

Tax Strategy and Risk Management

  • Stay up-to-date with changes in tax laws, regulations, and best practices, and proactively assess their impact on our customers’ products.

  • Monitor and maintain compliance with all federal, state, local, and international tax regulations.

  • Liaise with outside tax advisors and tax counsel as necessary.

What we're looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting, tax, or related field.

  • Active CPA designation.

  • 6-10 years of experience in tax planning, compliance, and strategy, preferably in a corporate or public accounting environment.

  • In-depth knowledge of tax laws, regulations, and accounting principles, including an understanding of international taxation.

  • Experience working in a fintech startup or a high-growth tech company is preferred.

  • Strong alignment with the company's values and mission, as well as a passion for innovation, technology, and diversity and inclusion.

  • Effective communicator, with a unique ability to explain and write about complex tax topics clearly and concisely. Prolific writers are welcome.

  • Adept context switcher, who can meet each stakeholder at their knowledge level to share insight, information, and help. A strong empathy for our customer, our team, and our problem is integral for this role.

  • Decisive and considerate decision maker who can distill many viewpoints, prioritize needs, disseminate decisions, and execute on them in a precise and timely manner.

  • Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with a track record of building and developing high-performing teams.
