Our Story
Hello there. We’re Zopa.
We started our journey back in 2005, building the first ever peer-to-peer lending company. Fast forward to 2020 and we launched Zopa Bank. A bank that listens to what our customers don’t like about finance and does the opposite. We’re redefining what it feels like to work in finance. Our vision for a new era of banking puts people front and centre — we’ve built a business that empowers everyone to aim high, every day, to move finance forward. Find out more about our fantastic offerings at Zopa.com!
We’re incredibly proud of our achievements and none of it would be possible without the amazing team here. It’s not just industry awards we’re winning, we’ve also been named in the top three UK’s Most Loved Workplaces.
If you embrace unconventional challenges, are unafraid to think differently and are driven to make an outsized impact, you’ll thrive here at Zopa, so join us, and make it count. Want to see us in action? Follow us on Instagram @zopalife
About the team
We are on a mission to level up our mobile app, and we’re looking for someone to join the team to help build our new Android app, written in Kotlin.
You will join our Mobile Platform team, which is responsible for the technical foundations of the app: its architecture, shared capabilities and libraries, core experiences, and the build and analytics infrastructure. The team plays an important role as thought leaders within Zopa’s mobile community and is accountable for driving our mobile technology forward.
Zopa’s ambition is to become Britain’s best bank, and we have recently launched the Zopa Account — a high-touch, mass-market product. The mobile app is our most important customer touchpoint, and it needs to be performant, reliable, and delightful. As a result, we are making a deliberate investment in the quality and evolution of our mobile technology.
Today, the app is built using React Native, but we are increasingly leveraging native capabilities in Swift and Kotlin. We are in the midst of a significant overhaul of the Android experience, moving toward a more fully native approach, and we’re looking for someone to join us on that journey.
A day in the life:
- You will report to the Engineering Manager for the Mobile Platform team.
- You will work closely with other native mobile engineers to design, build, and evolve the Android platform.
- You will play a key role in migrating the app from React Native to native Android, building in Kotlin with strong architectural foundations and industry best practices.
- You will collaborate with the wider mobile engineering community, including React Native developers, to define best practices for native development and mentor engineers as they cross-train into native Android.
- You will improve the performance, robustness, and overall quality of the app by identifying bottlenecks, addressing technical debt, and fixing defects to optimise the user experience.
- You will collaborate with cross-functional partners – including product managers, designers, and backend engineers to design and deliver features that fully leverage native Android capabilities.
About you:
- You are an experienced mobile app developer with a strong track record of building and shipping production Android applications in Kotlin, including publishing apps to the Google Play Store.
- You have a solid understanding of Android frameworks, platform APIs, and native app development best practices.
- You have worked on modern, high-engagement mobile applications, with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and delivering delightful user experiences.
- You treat quality as a first-class concern and have a proven history of raising engineering standards through thoughtful design, testing, and maintainable code. You take pride in your craft and in doing things right.
- You are motivated by opportunities to have broad impact, introducing better processes, tooling, and automation to raise the bar for mobile engineering across teams.
- You have a strong customer focus and a genuine interest in Zopa’s mission.
Added bonus (but not essential):
- Experience applying mobile security best practices in production Android applications.
- Experience working with CI/CD pipelines for mobile apps, including build, test, and release automation.
- Experience collaborating closely with iOS (Swift) and/or React Native engineers in a cross-platform mobile environment.
